Prints (etchings, monoprints and collagraphs) or paintings on paper sometimes become the basis for cut paper collage. They are background or foreground and provide line, texture and color which play off against other kinds of found paper. The collages also combine pieces of cardboard or fabric previously used for printed impressions in making monoprints.

A collagraph is a print taken from an assemblage or collage of materials glued to a rigid support such as masonite. Paper is placed on top of the inked collage and hand rubbed or put through an etching press to make the print. Multiple prints can be made from the same collaged materials.

Monotypes are one of a kind images developed on a flat surface such
as plexiglass using oil or water-based paints. The image is transferred to paper by hand rubbing or printing press. Painting and printmaking techniques are used to create the image.

Monotypes with vintage photographs are one-of-kind images composed in a similar fashion to the monotypes in gallery 2 using oil or water-based paints. These prints include vintage photographs added to the monotype prior to printing.

In solarplate etching an image is transferred to a polymer coated plate using sunlight or an artificial source of UV light. The plate is washed with water and the polymer is hardened by additional light exposure leaving the image on the plate ready to be inked and printed as an intaglio or relief print. This technique allows an etching to be made without the use of toxic chemicals.

The paintings relate to my printmaking through the use of applied texture and collage. Many of the collage elements in the paintings are torn from earlier prints or are pieces of mat board or cardboard which had been inked and printed as part of a collagraph. Strong color, dramatic shifts in shape relationships and tension between line and shape are characteristics of the paintings. There is a lot happening in a small space.
